The Permanent Dentition (Age 15 and up)
Orthodontics is not just for children and teens. In fact, 1 out of every 4 patients undergoing orthodontic treatment is an adult. No one is too old to have orthodontic treatment.
Adults seek orthodontic treatment for many of the same reasons as children. Some adults had orthodontic problems as children but were not able to remedy them until now. Others, who had been treated as children, may need additional treatment as adults due to relapse or limitations in initial treatment.
Benefits of Treatment
In addition to the obvious cosmetic benefits, adults may have orthodontics to:
- Correct relapse after previous orthodontic treatment due to lack retainer wear or other circumstances
- Address missing teeth
- Close spaces between the teeth
- Jaw surgery to correct the difference between the upper and lower jaws
- Improve the ability to brush and floss, especially for crowded or overlapping lower front teeth
- Reduce excessive wear on the teeth caused by grinding or poor bite
Appearance of Braces
Many adults are concerned by how they appear with braces. Often, Invisalign® (The invisible alternative to braces) can be used to treat adults. This technology involves clear removable aligners, created through advanced 3D imaging to align the teeth. For more severe problems, instead of metal brackets, we have the option of clear ceramic.
Typical Adult Treatment
Many of our adult patients have missing, worn or restored teeth. Because of this, patients may need some more diagnostic records than usual to properly determine the treatment plan.
Additionally, in order to make the colors of all their teeth match or the bite into a new smile, many of our patients will need some of these same teeth restored following treatment.
We work with your dentist to ensure that all the treatment is done in the proper sequence.
